The design of a KAFO is dependent upon the needs of the patient. As in other levels of disability the prescription of the device can only be made after a thorough assessment and discussion with the clinical team, including the patient.

A shell type KAFO consists of metal uprights with knee joints, attached to a moulded AFO section (with or without joints) and a moulded thigh section. The moulded sections can be made from plastic or laminated material.

As the plastic sections are closely moulded to the patient and cover a large surface area, large forces can be easily distributed.

The patient can change shoes, and (if appropriate modification are made) wear the device without a shoe.

Ischial Weight Bearing KAFO

When a patient cannot bear weight through the skeletal structure of the leg because of pain, fracture or weakness an ischial weight bearing KAFO can be made. The orthoses can be either conventional or using shells, and uses similar modification to a TF socket.
